Thanks for the interesting post. I was trying to subscribe to your RSS feed, but I wasn't able to get it working with my RSS reader. Is there something wrong, or is it my fault (I'm a bit of a technophobe!)?

How many questions are on your leadership self-assessment? Are there different categories? How is it measured? Is it on a Likert scale? Thanks in advance for your response.

ester,
frik chose to die in your presence because he knew he could trust you to do the right things by him. you once told that "frik was rustlers and rustlers was frik".i believe he knew you valued him for himself and not just the persona others sought. he will always be what he is, what he was at any given moment.and rustlers was his brain child and can not be owned by others, only loaned out, than burned out.
will rustlers rise again? who knows? yes i miss him also. hey ester, i am writting this to you. a private letter in public view. atleast we knew him. we were honored.
love I

Have a look at our leadership style questionnaire on http://www.isivivane.com/survey/index.php?sid=38551 - one way of doing the study is to get the primary school head teacher to do a self-evaluation and then see if they are open to an evaluation using the same questionnaire by hir peers, subordinates and even students.

<em>I am researching for a doctoral dissertation. I am researching effective leadership style(s) in a mortgage banking industry with regard to job satisfaction during a financial crisis. I will be assessing about 10 leaders in the organization. I am searching for an instrument to use for the data collection.</em>

Hi Ervin - you are welcome to use our instrument on http://www.isivivane.com/survey/index.php?sid=38551 and adapt questions - this looks at how those in leadership positions think about their own leadership - so it is and approach to create self-reflection. It is developed for the South African environment and you'll see some questions relating to ancestors & culture that probably won't work elsewhere.

Dear Ministry,

Having visited your beautiful and very special country, I proudly had a sticker of Lesotho on my car window. Unfortunately somebody has stolen it recently, and I cannot point out Lesotho to interested people, who gaze at all stickers I have collected on my car, one for each country I have visited.

Of course general stickers are for sale on the internet, but I am now looking at "Smile and laugh more often", which is of course a healthy message to all world citizens!

May I ask you: would it be possible to obtain 2 examples (1 reserve) of this beautiful sticker? I will of course pay for the expenses. Looking very much forward to your reply and with kindest regards, Linda Olyhoeck, Netherlands Embassy in Addis Abeba.

Thanks for the post - what would the objectives be of the assessment - to feed back to leaders? WHo would provide input into the research? How long to you have to perform the research?

Hello Nadine - I recently heard an amazing story about the coco de mer at a storytelling workshop last year....apparently, there are seperate groves of distinctly male and female trees. When the moon is full in the dead of night, the male trees 'walk' into the female groves and that, basically, is how cocos de mer are made. The trees only live on two islands on the seychelles. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coco_de_mer

it looks like an ancient rugby ball to me that can withstand the violent game of rough and tumble.. but it has a feeling of being strong and durable and certainly inseparable. the three cords look so permanent and give the impression of the unity of the three elements of a human being: body, soul and spirit. maybe the ancients wanted to preserve this balance and adhesion in their practice of medicine. it also looks edible like some coconut shells and a person may find sustenance when taking it apart when it dies it lives forever in those who have eaten it!

"Wu wei is an important Taoist teaching. This phrase means "non-doing," or "non-action." This literal translation, however, is misleading. This concept means that heaven will manifest its will for us in a spontaneous manner if we allow it to.We can thereby attain a much more sublime level of peace and happiness than by following a deliberate set of virtuous actions."

From this, I understand that I need to take daily action (chop wood, carry water) but that the outcome of that action, if I don't try to control it, will be in accordance with a higher imagination. I think that is why game theory feels so very limiting to me. The paradox is that when we let go of trying to define the bigger picture, we are guided to far better solutions. Any failure on my part is not because I haven't defined the bigger picture, but as a result of not putting in the humble action that I need to do from my side.

When we try to touch a snowflake it melts. Allow something to be what it will be. This doesn't mean chaos. Far from it. But if each person in an organisation is doing what they need to do on a daily basis, the results will form their own picture. Trying to name the game and give it rules and rituals ruins it. I've seen it happen over and over again - precisely the same is true of religion.

The fact that the group of 20 is together in the first place suggests that they are already playing a game of some sort. All that is done is to use the game metaphor to unpack the game and help people to decide what game they would rather be playing in contrast to the game that they are playing. Key to using the game metaphor is that everyone should be open about the game and participation is strictly voluntary - no hidden agendas or press ganging.

Harmony occurs when everyone has a say in how the game works. Everyone knows what is expected of them and what they, in turn, can expect from everyone else. The metaphor literally allows participants to deconstruct and then consciously create the game they would like to be playing.

So in a group of say, 20 people in an organisation, a vote is taken and 9 want to play one game, 5 another and 6 another, by the rules of democracy the first game (with 9 votes) is played. This still leaves the majority of the group uncomfortable and forced to play a game they didn't choose and haven't agreed upon! How would this create harmony?

The main point of this is that people should agree on the games they wish to play - this removes possibility of confustion...

The games that people play are destructive precisely because they have lost the ability to discern between reality and illusion. It may be a 'light-hearted' experience but I find nothing fun about losing hundreds of species on a daily basis to the ignorance of mankind!

The intention needn't be to have winners an losers. The rules / goals etc. can all be agreed upfront by all participants using democratic principles. Makes the experience more satisfying. At least then you buy into something that you have been a part of creating. We merely need to name the game and be honest about it. No hidden agendas - those are the ugly games. The kind of games you describe sound like blood sports - remember, the participants are willing and they are confortable with the price they pay. Using the metaphor you can see that relationships, the economy, advertising etc. etc. can all be deconstructed using game metaphor. The metaphor asks you to be deliberate and state which game you are playing.

Not suggesting that game is the only way to experience organisational life and experience - but it is certainly a profoundly useful one. A lighthearted approach is invariably more creative. Eminent psychiatrist Thomasz Szasz suggests that many experience confusion and helplessness when they cannot discern the game nature of reality. The metaphor is also extremely useful in organisations when it is used by participants to openly negotiate their own rules, roles, ritualis, language, value and goals going forward using democratic principles. All we have to do is name the game such as 'lets start a successful business, have lots of fun and make lots of money' or 'lets be friends' or 'we know where we are going'.

The game, as metapor, is based on a few premises that feel instinctively out of sync:

1. It has "rules" - the very definition of a rule is something that you blindly follow - don't question, don't think for yourself, don't innovate and don't try to find different ways of doing things.
2. Its intention, from the outset, is to have winners and losers. This inspires war-like behaviour in all participants.
3. In a game of teams - there is no co-operation between them - each team will consult amongst themselves SECRETLY on how to 'beat' (ugh - another horrible word) the other team.
4. The word 'game', in itself, lacks authenticity. It says that you don't have to be honest or open.

Finally, and most importantly, in the world of the ignorant, "game" is something that is hunted and killed for sport!!
